FAITH CHAPEL

Faith Chapel is located in the Jekyll Island Historic District, a National Historic Landmark administered by the state of Georgia. Originally occupied by the Guale Indians, the island was later used as an outpost and plantation by the British. In 1886 the island was purchased by a social club and became known as the "Jekyll Island Club". This exclusive club constructed private "cottages" and a magnificent club house and had as its members the Morgans, Vanderbilts, Astors and Pulitzers.
During the Second World War, the U. S. government ordered the area evacuated and the state of Georgia purchased the island in 1947 and turned it into a state park. Many of the "cottages" and the club house have been preserved and are open to the public.
Faith Chapel, a gothic-style chapel, was built in 1904 with Tidewater Red Cypress shingles. The chapel features two beautiful stained glass windows-one signed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. This painting captures the light shining through the Tiffany window that is located in the rear, Western part of the chapel. The chapel remains a popular place for worship, prayer, baptisms and weddings.
